The eCAB project. A digital version of the Corpus des Astronomes Byzantins (CAB)

CIOL

ISSN 2983-8037

Presentation and aim

From 1983, The CAB produces critical editions of the major texts of Byzantine astronomy. It includes treatises by well-known authors (Georgios Gemistos Plethon, Gregorios Chionades, Nicephoros Gregoras, Theodoros Meliteniotes, Stephanos of Alexandria, etc.), but also anonymous texts and Astrolabica. It also takes into account some sources of Byzantine astronomy (e.g. Ptolemy's Tables Faciles), transmitted to Byzantium via Greek, Persian, Hebrew, Arabic, or Latin versions. To date, the CAB series totalizes eleven titles (1-11) and several volumes are in preparation.

The aim of the eCAB project is to provide scholars with a digital version of the CAB. Tagged corpus (texts and translations) will be progressively uploaded on the interfaces of the GREgORI Project.

Text processing is performed by using computer tools and linguistic resources developed by the GREgORI Project (UCLouvain, Belgium), in collaboration with the Association Calfa.

The first step of the project focuses on texts published in the volume 1-10 of the series, offering

  • A free access to the PDF versions of the volumes 1-10
  • A free access to the tagged corpus (texts and translations, with lemmatization and POS-tagging) of the uploaded volumes on the interfaces of the GREgORI project
  • A free access to the PDF versions of the cumulative index of texts and translations published in volumes 1-10
